Maury, Dabney Herndon (1822–1900) Confederate army officer, born in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Maury was commander of the District of the Gulf (1863–65) who supervised the construction of Mobile's defenses but was forced to order the city's evacuation (1865). Earlier in the conflict he had performed admirably at the battle of Pea Ridge (1862) and commanded a division at Corinth (1862) and at Vicksburg (1863). After the war Maury served as U.S. minister to Colombia (1885–89). Before resigning his U.S. Army commission to join the Confederate forces, Maury had been recognized for meritorious conduct during the Mexican War (1846–48).
