Marshall Islands an archipelago of thirty-four islands in the North Pacific Ocean. A republic, its capital is Majuro, which in 1944 became the first Japanese possession taken by U.S. forces in World War II. Other islands were later occupied, and the Marshall Islands remained under U.S. control until the end of the war. In 1946, Bikini atoll, part of the archipelago, was used by the U.S. as a nuclear testing ground. The Marshalls became self-governing in 1979.
