Marianas Islands

Marianas Islands a group of islands in the western Pacific, comprising Guam and the Northern Marianas. In June 1944, during World War II, the Battle of the Philippine Sea between the United States and Japan took place off the Marianas. It was the largest carrier duel of World War II, and the Japanese Mobile Fleet and its aviation arm were left grievously hurt. Also called Mariana Islands.
