Malvern Hill, Battle of the last of the
Seven Days' Battles in Virginia during the
Civil War, ending the
Peninsular campaign. On July 1, 1862, Union forces, under Gen.
George B. McClellan, successfully defended their upper position against Gen.
Robert E. Lee's poorly coordinated and ultimately costly frontal attack. McClellan withdrew to James River. With
Richmond no longer threatened, Gen.
Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was sent to begin the Northern Virginia campaign.
