Maine, Sinking of the USS a U.S. battleship sent to protect American lives and property that exploded and sank in Havana on February 15, 1898, killing 260 men. Encouraged by the sensationalist press, the American public largely believed that Spanish forces mined the ship. In March, the U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry found that an external explosion caused the sinking, rejecting viable alternative explanations. The true cause remains unknown, despite further official inquiries in 1911 and 1975. While many see the sinking as the final step to the
Spanish-American War (1898), this argument ignores President
William McKinley's attempts to avoid war for a month after the initial court's finding.
