Mackenzie, Ranald Slidell

Mackenzie, Ranald Slidell (1840–89) Union army officer in the corps of engineers, born in New York City. Mackenzie saw action at First Bull Run (1861), Fredericksburg (1862), Chancellorsville (1863), and Gettysburg (1863). As a brigade commander he distinguished himself at Cedar Creek (1864) before taking part in the final siege and capture of Petersburg (1865). After the war Mackenzie held a series of frontier commands, becoming recognized as one of the Indian-fighting army's most capable officers. His behavior, however, became increasingly erratic. He was found insane and in 1884 was retired from military service.

Mackenzie was the son of Alexander Slidell Mackenzie.
