MacDill Air Force Base a U.S. Air Force Base in Tampa Bay, Florida, established in 1941. First named Southeast Air Base, it was renamed for Col. Leslie MacDill. The base was a major training center and staging area for Air Force personnel and the
Women's Army Corps during
World War II, housing up to 15,000 troops at one time. In addition, German prisoners of war were interned there. Almost closed in 1960, MacDill was kept open due to the
Cuban Missile Crisis (1962–63). It became
Tactical Air Command in 1963. Today it also runs the 6th Air Refueling Wing, U.S.
Central Command, and U.S.
Special Operations Command.
