Lovell, Solomon (1732–1801)
Revolutionary War officer, born in Abington, Massachusetts. Lovell is remembered primarily for his participation in the Penobscot expedition (1779), the largest amphibious operation of the Revolution. Lovell was in command of the land forces in this disastrous attempt to expel the British from what is now Penobscot Bay, Maine; (then Massachusetts). Lovell and the naval commander (
Dudley Saltonstall) could not agree on strategy. Lovell had previously led a militia unit in the battle of Rhode Island (1778) and was with the rebel force that seized
Dorchester Heights (1776).
