Louisiana Purchase the acquisition, for $15 million, of the vast territory (approximately 900,000 square miles, or 2.3 million square km) by the United States from France in 1803, during Thomas Jefferson's first administration. The territory extended from the Mississippi River west to the Rocky Mountains, and from the Gulf of Mexico north to the Canadian border. Eventually, all or part of fifteen states were formed within that region.
