Lookout Mountain, Battle of a
Civil War battle on November 24, 1863, that, along with the battle of
Missionary Ridge (November 25), ended the Confederate siege of Union troops at
Chattanooga (1863). Gen.
Joseph Hooker, commanding the right wing of
Ulysses S. Grant's Union army, drove Gen.
Braxton Bragg's Confederate forces off the mountain, which they had held since the battle of
Chickamauga (1863).
It is also called the
Battle above the Clouds because low-hanging clouds hid contending forces from observers in the valley of the Tennessee.
