Long, James (1792 or 1793–1822) leader of two filibustering expeditions from the United States into Spanish Texas. The first of these (1819) captured Nacogdoches and resulted in Long's being chosen president of the newly created
Republic of Texas, but the venture ended the same year when a Spanish expedition attacked the Anglo-American invaders. The following year Long took command of Anglo-American filibusterers on Bolivar Peninsula, but their situation became complicated by the struggle for Mexican independence from Spain, with the result that Long was arrested and sent to Mexico City, where he was killed, perhaps intentionally, by a sentry.
