Logan, James (1776?–1812) Shawnee warrior (Spemica Lawba) who became an American hero during the
War of 1812 when he was fatally wounded in an encounter with a British party. As a boy Logan had been captured by Kentuckians who attacked his town (1786); he apparently acquired the name by which he was known to whites from their leader,
Benjamin Logan, who befriended him. From 1789 to 1795 Logan, who had been released in exchange, fought with the Shawnees against the United States, but once hostilities were concluded, he became friendly with Americans and advocated peace. His reliability and knowledge of English made him useful as an intermediary. During the
War of 1812, Logan served with American forces, helping guide the army of Gen.
William Hull through Ohio to Detroit, and later serving under the commander in chief
William Henry Harrison.
