Little, George (1754–1809) U.S. naval officer. Born in Massachusetts, Little entered the navy early in the Revolutionary War. He was imprisoned twice by the British, and the second time escaped to France where Benjamin Franklin helped him return to America. Little took command of the sloop Winthrop in 1782 and captured nearly the entire British garrison at Penobscot. He returned to his farm in 1783, but was called back to duty for the Quasi-War with France in 1799. As captain of the frigate Boston he was held liable for taking a Danish brig, but he also captured a French privateer and the naval corvette Berceau.
