Leisler, Jacob ˈlīslər (1640?–91) officer of the Dutch East India Company, born in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. Leisler was a prosperous merchant and prominent leader of New Amsterdam, and de facto lieutenant governor of New York (1689–91). Leisler held several government positions under both Dutch and English administrations, including militia captain. When the militia revolted in 1689, the lieutenant governor fled and Leisler later assumed the title. When the newly commissioned governor arrived, Leisler was arrested, found guilty of treason, hanged, and then beheaded. In 1695 Parliament reversed the New York court's sentences and legitimized his administration.
