Lee, Stephen Dill

Lee, Stephen Dill (1833–1908) Confederate army officer, born in Charleston, South Carolina. Lee was commander of all cavalry in Mississippi (1863–64), and successfully opposed a series of Union raids into that state before suffering heavy losses at Tupelo (1864). Lee then commanded a corps in the defense of Atlanta (1864–65), twice incurring heavy losses because of precipitate attacks. Previously Lee's artillery battalion had played major roles at Second Bull Run (1862) and Antietam (1862), and his brigade had performed admirably during the defense of Vicksburg (1862). From 1904 until his death, Lee was commander in chief of the United Confederate Veterans.

When Lee was promoted to lieutenant general at the age of thirty, he was the youngest person to hold that rank up to that point in U.S. history.
