Lebanon Crisis (1958) the protests against and potential overthrow of the pro-Western Lebanese government of President Camille Chamoun, a Christian, after the creation of a pro-Soviet United Arab Republic by Egypt and Syria in February 1958 and after the Arab nationalist coup in Iraq on July 14, 1958. Using the
Eisenhower Doctrine, Chamoun requested U.S. troops, who, at President
Dwight D. Eisenhower's orders, first arrived in Lebanon on July 15 and completely withdrawn by October 15. It was the United States's first intervention in the Middle East, and it was the first time
NATO-committed troops were withdrawn for out-of-area operations.
