Laos, raid into

Laos, raid into an Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) invasion of Laos beginning on February 8, 1971, to destroy the Communist supply line along the Ho Chi Minh Trail and to test the new ARVN. In an attempt approved by President Richard M. Nixon, who was advised by Gen. Creighton Abrams, some 21,000 ARVN troops, supported by American B-52 bombers, invaded Laos and were met by some 36,000 North Vietnamese troops. The ARVN suffered over 9,000 casualties, and the North Vietnamese suffered 14,000. After six weeks of the war's heaviest fighting, the South Vietnamese troops retreated into Vietnam.
