Know Nothing party Know-Nothing a secretive movement established in New York City in 1849. Members were told to answer “I know nothing” when asked about their society's activities. In 1852, under James W. Barker, the Know-Nothings organized nationally. The party, which was officially called the American Party, believed in preserving and defending fundamental American traditions. It was against foreign immigration, and particularly against Catholics, whose allegiance to the Pope was feared. Strongest in the northeast, the Know-Nothings elected many candidates to federal and state offices in 1854. Initially neutral on the slavery issue, in 1855 the Know-Nothings adopted a proslavery stand, driving out most antislavery members. By 1857 most northern members had joined the
Republican Party.
