Kimball, Nathan (1823?–98) Union army officer, born in Fredericksburg, Indiana. Kimball assumed division command in an 1862 battle with Gen. Stonewall Jackson, checking his advance, driving him from the field, and inflicting hundreds of casualties on the Confederates. He again distinguished himself at Fredericksburg (1862), where he was badly wounded. His skill in directing his men at the battle of Peachtree Creek (1864) led to his being given a division; he subsequently participated in the battles of Franklin and Nashville (1864). After the war Kimball was active in civil and political service and in veterans' affairs, helping to organize the Grand Army of the Republic in Indiana. He served two terms as state treasurer and in 1872 was elected to the state legislature. In 1873 President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him surveyor general of Utah.
