Kenney, George Churchill

Kenney, George Churchill (1889–1977) military aviator and commander, born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (his family was from Brookline, Massachusetts). His career spanned the evolution of U.S. air power from the Aviation Section of the Army Signal Corps, to the Army Air Corps (1925), to the independent U.S. Air Force (1947). As a fighter pilot during World War I, Kenney flew seventy-five missions, shot down two German planes, and received a Distinguished Service Cross and a Silver Star. From 1942 until the end of World War II (1945) Kenney held various commands in the Pacific, where he became known for his bold and innovative tactics, as well as his administrative skills. His command seized control of the skies from the Japanese and provided air support for numerous amphibious invasions of the ground forces led by Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Kenney's most notable achievements included the destruction of the enemy armada in the battle of the Bismarck Sea (1943), and daring airborne assaults in Northeast New Guinea (1943) and in the Philippines (1945).
