Johnston, William Preston (1831–99) Confederate army officer with a Kentucky regiment, born in Louisville, Kentucky. Johnston became aide-de-camp to
Jefferson Davis and saw action at the battles of
Seven Pines (1862),
Cold Harbor (1864), and
Petersburg (1864). After the war Johnston had a notable career in academia, as a department chairman at Washington College (later Washington and Lee University), as president of Louisiana State University, and as one of the founders of Tulane University.
