JS-3 the third in a series of World War II tanks named for Josef Stalin, the JS-3 had all the advantages of the tanks that had preceded it, and it came to be regarded as the “mother” of modern tank designs. It was nicknamed “Pike” because of its narrow frontal aspect, which made it difficult to knock out. In Russia, these tanks were designated “IS-1, -2,” etc.
