Ives, Joseph Christmas

Ives, Joseph Christmas (1828–68) army officer in the corps of topographical engineers, born Christmas Day in New York City. Returning from an expedition up the Colorado River (1857–58), Ives and his fellow explorers passed through the Grand Canyon. (They are believed to be the first white men to set foot on its floor.) Ives was the engineer and architect of the Washington Monument (1859–60). When the Civil War broke out, he chose to serve as a captain of engineers with the Confederate forces—his wife was from the South, Robert E. Lee had been his commandant at West Point, and Jefferson Davis, to whom he became aide-de-camp, was a personal friend.
