Irvine, James (1735–1819) Revolutionary army officer,born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Innes was an officer in both the Pennsylvania militia and Continental army. Irvine commanded a brigade at the battle of
Germantown (1777), and it was on his advice that Gen.
George Washington took up winter quarters at
Valley Forge (1777–78). He was wounded and captured during a skirmish against British forces in 1777 and not released until 1781.
