Hood, John Bell (1831–79) Confederate army officer, born in Owingsville, Kentucky. His heroic leadership was noted at Gaines' Mill (1862) and Second Bull Run (1862). Hood was wounded at Gettysburg (1863) and again at Chickamauga (1863). As commander of the Army of Tennessee, his attempts to prevent the capture of Atlanta failed, and the army was nearly wiped out near Nashville in late 1864, after which he was relieved of command.
