Greene, Samuel Dana

Greene, Samuel Dana (1840–84) Union naval officer, born in Apponang, Rhode Island. Green was executive officer of the ironclad Monitor from its launching until its sinking during a gale. During its battle with the Confederate ironclad Virginia (1862), Greene, who had been in the turret directing the ship's guns, assumed command when the captain was wounded. When the damaged Virginia turned away, rather than pursue her, Greene reverted to his first charge, protecting a grounded Union ship. The criticism heaped on him for this decision affected him for the rest of his life, much of which he spent in attempts to justify it. Eventually he committed suicide. Most of Greene's postwar career was spent at the U.S. Naval Academy.
