Ghost Dance a messianic religious frenzy among the Columbia River tribes in the 1870s, the White Mountain Apaches in 1881, and the tribes of the northern Great Plains ca. 1889-90. The Ghost Dance movement can be traced to the Paiute shaman Wovoka who preached a blissful afterlife in which believers would be reunited with dead friends and relatives, game (particularly the bison) would be plentiful, and there would be no “white man.” Among the
Lakota Sioux the movement took on an aggressive cast and led to active attempts to expel the white intruders from Indian lands which ended in the battle of
Wounded Knee in December 1890, marking the end of the
Plains Indians Wars.
