Evans, Nathan George (1824–68) Confederate army officer, born in Marion, South Carolina. His brigade played a pivotal role at
First Bull Run (1861) and fought gallantly at
Second Bull Run and
Antietam (both 1862), despite heavy losses, which came to be considered Evans's trademark—though whether for vigorous fighting or poor preparation is disputed. He was twice court-martialed and twice acquitted for intoxication and disobedience of orders.
