”Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue” policy a compromise policy regarding the service of gays and lesbians in the U.S. armed forces developed following President Bill Clinton's attempt in 1993 to overturn the then-existing policy which called for the immediate discharge of armed forces personnel found to be homosexual. Despite significant support by gay rights advocates, President Clinton's move was strongly opposed by many military, political, and religious leaders. As a result, a compromise policy was worked out which permits homosexuals to serve so long as they do not openly declare their sexual preferences and do not engage in homosexual activities (which remain illegal in some states). At the same time, military authorities are prohibited from actively seeking out gay and lesbian service members.
