Desert One the site of a failed mission in April 1980 to rescue American hostages held in the U.S. Embassy in Teheran. The mission, to have been carried out by the elite
Delta Force, went disastrously wrong when three of its aircraft failed and two others were destroyed by colliding in flight near the staging post for the mission in the Iranian desert south of Teheran.
