Craven, Tunis Augustus MacDonough (1813–64) Union naval officer, born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and brother of Adm.
Thomas Tingey Craven. One of the navy's most distinguished surveyors and hydrographers, Craven was chosen in 1857 to command an expedition to survey a projected ship canal route from the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Isthmus of Panama. In 1863 Craven was given command of the newly built ironclad
Tecumseh, which struck a Confederate mine the following year in the attack on Fort Morgan near Mobile, Alabama. Craven sacrificed his life to save a fellow naval officer.
