Corinth, Battle of a Civil War battle in Mississippi that was fought October 3–4, 1862. Confederate troops wanted to recapture Corinth, an important transportation center, and march into Middle Tennessee. However, Confederate troops pushed the Federals back and passed into the city through a gap in Union forces. Since Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn felt confident that he could defeat Union forces the next day, and heat, fatigue, and water shortages were taking a toll on the troops, he halted fighting for the day. Before resuming fighting the next day, Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans regrouped defenses, and Union artillery caused heavy casualties, forcing the Confederates into retreat. Van Dorn was defeated at Hatchie Bridge, Tennessee, the following day.
