Congress, USS

Congress, USS one of six frigates authorized by the U.S. Congress, including the USS Constitution, and launched on August 15, 1799. The Congress participated in a Quasi-war with France (escorting U.S. merchant ships to the East Indies), the Barbary War (1804), and the War of 1812. In 1829, it was a receiving ship at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Virginia, and, in 1834, judged unfit for repair and broken up.
