Cincinnati, Society of the a veterans' organization for officers of the Revolutionary War, founded in 1783 in Newburgh, New York. It was established with the aim of preserving ties between the officers and pressuring the national government to honor their pension claims. Membership to the society could be passed to the eldest male descendent, and excluded enlisted men. The organization had chapters in all thirteen states and was one of the country's earliest national institutions. However, by the 1830s, with the passing of the Revolutionary generation, interest in the group had waned and many state chapters closed. Around the Centennial of 1876, several dormant state chapters were revived in the East and new ones created in the West.
