Cherokee War (1759–61) three campaigns mounted by the white colonists of the Carolinas against the Cherokee Indians. The first campaign, in 1759, was ended by an outbreak of smallpox among the colonial forces. The second, in 1760, was led by British regulars but was successfully turned back by the Cherokees. The third, in 1761, was also led by British regulars and resulted in some concessions by the Cherokees. The war arose from the greed for land of the colonists and misunderstandings between the colonists and the Cherokees, and took place in the context of the greater
French and Indian War (1754–63) being fought to the north.
