Chemical Warfare Service an organization of the U.S.
War Department, created in May 1918 by presidential executive order, and charged with the exclusive jurisdiction and control of the manufacture and production of toxic gases, gas-defense applicances, including gas-shell filling plants, and all research in connection with gas warfare. During
World War II, the Service was responsible for training not only its own troops but also the entire U.S. Army and civilians for defense against the use of chemical, mortar, smoke generator, and chemical air operations in case of enemy attack. In 1946, the Service became the Chemical Corps of the U.S. Army.
