Charlestown Navy Yard one of six navy yards authorized by Congress in 1799, the Boston site of the yard was not purchased until two years later. The yard was used primarily for storage until the
War of 1812, when the Navy's first ship-of-the-line, the USS
Independence, was built there. The shipyard built over 200 warships, and maintained or repaired thousands of ships. The frigate USS
Constitution, known as “Old Ironsides,” inaugurated the drydock in 1833. From 1837 until the yard closed in 1975, most of the rope and cordage used by Navy ships was made there. During
World War II, more than 50,000 people worked at the yard.The yard is now part of the Boston National Historical Park. Also called
Boston Naval Shipyard or
Boston Navy Yard.
