Cedar Mountain the Virginia site of a Civil War battle fought on August 9, 1862. The battle occurred during the Northern Virginia campaign of 1862 and involved over 24,000 men. Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson led Confederate troops to Gordonsville, Virginia, in July and was reinforced with another division. Union forces led by Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks were deployed to Culpeper County, Virginia, to seize the rail junction in Gordonsville. While Union forces dominated the early stages of the battle at Cedar Mountain, a counterattack by the Confederates changed the tide of the encounter, and the Confederates won. Also called Slaughter's Mountain and Cedar Run.
