Carter Doctrine on January 23, 1980, after a series of events in 1979 threatening American interests in the Persian Gulf region, President
Jimmy Carter announced that the United States would use military force if necessary to defend those interests, which included oil resources. He created a
Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force to provide military aid and to assist in emergency situations in the gulf.
