Camp David Accords two parallel but separate agreements signed on September 17, 1978, by President
Jimmy Carter, who mediated the negotiations, Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin, and Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, after a two-week conference at Camp David, Maryland, to establish a Middle East peace. In the first agreement, Sadat pledged to recognize Israel and sign a peace treaty if Begin promised to withdraw Israeli troops from the Sinai. In the second, Begin agreed to suspend Israeli settlements on the West Bank until further negotiations with Palestinian representatives. The West Bank negotiations were unfulfilled, largely because of each country's interpretation of the Palestinian clauses in the agreements.
