Bush, George Walker (1946–) 43rd president of the United States, born in New Haven, Connecticut. During the
Vietnam War, Bush served two years in the Texas Air National Guard. He was governor of Texas from 1994 to 2001. Bush, son of the 41st president, defeated Vice President Al Gore (winner of the popular vote by over 500,000 votes) in one of the closest elections in U.S. history. He won 271 electoral votes, just one more than the minimum; five weeks after election day, Bush was awarded Florida's twenty-five electoral votes by a (contested) margin of 537 out of 6 million cast.
