Bragg, Braxton (1817–76) Confederate general, born in Warrenton, North Carolina. Bragg was the fifth ranking officer in the
Confederacy. He fought in the
Seminole Wars (1855–58) and in the
Mexican War (1846–48), distinguishing himself at
Buena Vista (1847). In the
Civil War, Bragg was promoted to full general and given permanent command of the Western Department (1862). Reinforced by
James Longstreet, he defeated
William S. Rosecrans at
Chickamauga (1863), the largest battle in western theater, but failed to retake
Chattanooga (1863). Relieved of field command after losing
Missionary Ridge to
Ulysses S. Grant (1863), he became a military adviser to
Jefferson Davis (1864–65).
