Bismarck Sea, Battle of the (March 3, 1943) a
World War II naval battle in which combined Allied sea and air forces destroyed a Japanese convoy near New Guinea. Eight troop transports and eight destroyers were attacked as they carried a Japanese army division to reinforce positions in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Low-level bombing and strafing runs by U.S. and Australian
B-25 s, followed by torpedo attacks from U.S.
PT boats, sunk all the transports and four destroyers.
