Berlin Airlift (June 22, 1948–May 12, 1949) a combined effort by the U.S. Air Force and the
RAF to evade the Soviet blockade of the occupation zones. The airlift brought in the 4,500 tons Berlin needed daily to support its industry and the city's population of two million. The airlift planes (two-thirds American and one-third British) were harassed by Soviet planes, but were not shot at.
The time for loading the planes was a mere hour and 25 minutes, while unloading in Berlin took only 49 minutes. By the end of the blockade, 1,783,000 tons had been lifted, with thirty-one lives lost in 12 fatal accidents.
