Beauregard, Pierre Gustave Toutant ˈbōriˌgärd (1818–93) Confederate general, born in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. Beauregard was the commander of the Department of South Carolina and Georgia and of the Military Division of the West; he was nicknamed “Old Bory.” Beauregard is best known for having ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter; he received its surrender on April 14, 1861. He was promoted to full general after leading (with Gen. Joseph E. Johnston) the Confederate victory at the battle of First Bull Run (1861).
