Barringer, Rufus (1821–95) Confederate army officer, born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. As a captain in the 1st North Carolina Cavalry, he served in the
Peninsular,
Second Bull Run,
Antietam,
Fredericksburg (all 1862), and
Chancellorsville (1863) campaigns. As a brigadier general, he received Gen.
Robert E. Lee's compliments for a rout at
Reams Station (1864). During the war, Barringer participated in seventy-six actions, had two horses shot from under him, and was wounded three times.
When Barringer was captured near
Petersburg (1865), he was introduced to President
Abraham Lincoln, who, as a former fellow congressman with Barringer's brother, wrote a note requesting special consideration for him.
