Baker, Edward Dickinson (1811–61) Union army officer, born in London, England. As a political associate and longtime friend of President
Abraham Lincoln, Baker introduced Lincoln at the presidential inauguration in March 1861. In the
Civil War, he was nominated by Lincoln as brigadier general in the U.S. volunteers and given command of the California Regiment. He was killed in action at
Ball's Bluff on the Potomac River.
The Lincolns held such regard for Baker that they named their second son Edward in his honor.
