Anglo-Dutch Wars (1652-54, 1664-67) early wars for control of the colonies in North America. British desire to halt Dutch trade with British colonies led to the first war, which ended in a stalemate. In the second war the British took New Netherland. Gov.
Peter Stuyvesant surrendered, and New Amsterdam became New York in 1664, after the August 25 landing of the first British regulars on North American soil.
