Advance Base School

Advance Base School a U.S. Navy submarine school in New London, Connecticut. The Navy made it a submarine base (SUBASE) in 1916. Since then, it has been called Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE NLON). It occupies more than 500 acres of land on the east side of the Thames River in Groton, Connecticut. The base supports twenty-one attack submarines, the Navy's nuclear research deep submersible (NR-1), the Navy's Submarine School, the Naval Submarine Facility, the Submarine Force Tactical Development Group, and the Commander Submarine Development Squadron 12. All submarines in the Navy are stationed here for training, and the base provides support and housing facilities for 10,000 active duty personnel as well as for civilian workers and their families.
