postpartum

postpartum (pohst-par-tŭm) adj. relating to the period of a few days immediately after birth. p. blues (baby blues) brief episodes of tearfulness, emotional instability, poor sleep, and irritability that affect about half of all women during the first week after delivery. Compare postnatal (depression), puerperal (psychosis). p. haemorrhage (PPH) excessive bleeding (>500 ml) from the genital tract within 24 hours of delivery (primary PPH) or after 24 hours (secondary PPH).
